There is a saying that goes "a picture is worth a thousand words." And with the increased use of social media websites like Facebook and Twitter along with high-tech mobile devices that have built-in cameras, posting snapshots is becoming more common than ever.
However, American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) research revealed that almost 50 percent of men and women between the ages of 18 and 24 have untagged or taken down pictures of themselves because they aren't satisfied with their smile. And crooked pearly whites can affect more than your confidence.
In a recent survey, 78 percent of 1,000 adults in the United States revealed that they believed people with misaligned teeth were more likely to be unsuccessful. Furthermore, people said that they thought that their smiles could keep them from getting a better job.
''If you're sitting in a meeting with somebody, people will get a little bit self-conscious if they see that they've got some protrusions, or some gaps, or they've got some crowding going on,'' top director of AAO Chris Vranas said in a statement. ''What this [survey] tells me is adults in particular are much more conscious about their overall health and their overall look.''
No one's confidence should ever be compromised. In the event that you'd like to get the smile you've always dreamed about, you may want to think about setting up an appointment with an orthodontist like Dr. Tanya Vaysman of Upper Eastside Orthodontists. If this applies to you, it's time to stop letting your teeth hold you back from having the self-esteem that you deserve. To take action today, schedule a meeting with New York orthodontist Dr. Tanya Vaysman of Upper Eastside Orthodontists. What exactly is Invisalign?
During your consultation, Dr. Vaysman may tell you that you are a good candidate for Invisalign. If you've heard the name before, but you weren't really clear what Invisalign could do for you, you'll be excited to discover that this type of treatment can straighten your teeth without brackets, bands or wires.
Your chompers will slowly shift your teeth into place over time by using custom aligners that are virtually invisible. The top and bottom trays are made of smooth plastic so that they fit comfortably. Every two weeks, you switch out the old ones and wear two new aligners.
In most cases, Invisalign is worn anywhere from 20 to 22 hours per day. You'll remove them when you eat, brush and floss your teeth. One of the many great things about wearing the aligners is that they are easy to clean and don't require you to accommodate any dietary restrictions!
How long will my treatment last?
On average, people who are being treated using Invisalign wear their trays for around nine to 18 months. You'll see your orthodontist in New York every month or so, just as you would if you were had other forms of orthodontics like adult braces.
However, Dr. Vaysman will tell you that every case is based on the individual's needs. You may only need to come in every six weeks. Invisalign makes it convenient to straighten your teeth. Most patients go through anywhere between 18 and 30 trays, but again this varies from case to case.
At Upper Eastside Orthodontists, we understand that you are busy. We'll work around your schedule so that coming in for appointments is convenient for you.
How can I get started?
Once you've called for an appointment, Dr. Vaysman will meet with you to see whether you could benefit from Invisalign. If she deems it the right choice for you, a mold of your teeth will be created so that we can order you your aligners. Once your trays come in, you can pick them up from our office and begin your treatment.

These days, one of the most important accessories that you can have isn't the latest designer handbag, but rather your smile. Unfortunately, some adults feel self conscious because their pearly whites are crooked, crowded or misaligned. New York City orthodontist Dr. Tanya Vaysman of Upper Eastside Orthodontists understands these concerns and wants to do all that is possible to help you regain your self-esteem.
When you schedule an appointment at our office, one course of treatment that you may explore are adult braces. If you think that this form of orthodontics is just for teenagers, think again. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, from 1994 to 2010, the number of Americans who are 18 and older and who have had their teeth straightened jumped 58 percent from 680,000 per year to 1.1 million annually.
Why you may be a good candidate for adult braces
One of the most common reasons that people require orthodontics is because their teeth are not straight. Dr. Vaysman, winner of the Academy of Dental Materials Award, will tell you that having crooked teeth doesn't just affect your appearance, it can also have a negative impact on the way you chew food. A bite that is not properly aligned can even lead to headaches and backaches.
Another common reason for getting adult braces involves correcting overbites. This condition creates an appearance in which the upper jaw protrudes, causing the your pearly whites to look as though they are too far forward. Underbites are also prevalent in some adults and occur when chompers stick out past the upper teeth. Both of these dental problems can lead to jaw and joint problems, wear and tear on your chompers and even gum issues.
Although mouths with gaps may be unique, it's important to note that gapped teeth can lead to periodontal diseases like gingivitis. Teeth protect the gums, and when too much of your oral tissue is exposed, it decreases the amount of protection offered by your chompers.
The different types of braces offered by Dr. Vaysman
In this day and age, you don't need to be embarrassed about having braces for adults. After you meet with Dr. Vaysman and she deems that you are a good candidate for orthodontics, both of you will discuss what type of braces will be most beneficial for your needs and budget.
♦ Traditional braces – The brackets are usually made of metal, ceramic or plastic and are secured using a band and wire.
♦ Clear braces – This bracketed option are ideal for patients who want their adult braces to be less visible.
♦ Lingual braces – These are also known as iBraces or invisible braces. They are placed on the inside of your teeth and are 100 percent individualized and created to fit your unique dental situation.
Invisalign is another option that is becoming increasingly popular because not only do they straighten teeth, they are also invisible so that most people won't even know you are correcting your smile. During your appointment, Dr. Vaysman will fit you for custom-made plastic aligners that you will wear for a short period and then replace with new trays every two weeks or so.

There's a saying that goes "You're never fully dressed without a smile," and that expression is certainly true in New York. Whether you're on your way to your Midtown office or you're picking up the kids from school, feeling confident about your pearly whites is important. But, unfortunately, it's impossible to let your personality shine through if you don't feel comfortable with the appearance of your teeth.
One of the most effective ways to straighten your chompers and correct problems like underbites, crossbites, deep bites and other jaw and dental problems is by having a New York orthodontist apply orthodontic braces. Although there are certainly a number of ways to correct these dental and jaw problems, braces are one of the most common and effective treatments.
In fact, a recent research study indicated that about one in five adults in the United States have corrected their misaligned teeth using this method. If you've thought about getting adult braces for a while, why put it off any longer?
At Upper Eastside Orthodontists in New York City, Dr. Tanya Vaysman, a New York orthodontist who specializes in metal, ceramic and invisible, also known as lingual braces, can ensure you achieve a runway-ready smile with the right treatment.
What type of braces are available at Upper Eastside Orthodontists?
At our Manhattan office, we offer various braces for teeth including those that are made with metal, ceramic, plastic or plastic. Metal brackets are silver in color and are the most common type. An archwire holds the bracket in place and the wire needs to be periodically adjusted by our specialists.
Another option that you have is to select ceramic brackets. In most cases, they are clear and are appropriate for patients who want to minimize the appearance of this form of orthodontic treatment.
Many people choose clear braces for their aesthetic appeal, but it's important to note that not only is there an additional charge for this type of bracket, the length of time that you have to wear them is increased compared to traditional metal-wired braces. Even if you opt for traditional metal braces, a New York orthodontic professional like Dr. Vaysman can use elastic ties to keep the clean brackets from being too noticeable.
However, although they have to remain on your teeth for longer, clear orthodontic braces are as durable and don't require more care than metal bracket braces.
Upper Eastside Orthodontists, offering the latest and greatest in orthodontic care
The newest and perhaps most innovative types of braces that are available in New York City are incognito braces, iBraces. These invisible braces, which are also known as lingual braces, are placed on the inside of your teeth so that they are completely inconspicuous.
Recently, iBraces have soared in popularity for multiple reasons. They are the only braces on the market that are 100 percent customizable to fit your teeth, which makes wearing them more comfortable than traditional braces and just as effective as the metal and ceramic brackets at straightening your pearly whites.
Dr. Vaysman also may suggest that you correct your smile with Invisalign. Custom-made aligners gradually straighten your noshers over time. Approximately every two weeks, the trays, which are made of clear plastic, are switched. Before you know it, you'll feel confident about showing off your teeth in no time.
Which type of braces offered at Upper Eastside Orthodontists are right for me?
Choosing to get orthodontic treatment is a big decision. To receive an expert recommendation about which form of adult braces are right for you, it's best that you schedule an appointment with Dr. Vaysman. As a dental professional, she will will help you decide which type of brackets suit your needs best based on various factors, such as aesthetics, cost and length of treatment.

DID YOU KNOW THAT OCTOBER IS DENTAL HYGIENE MONTH? You didn’t? Well, with your orthodontic treatment underway, dental hygiene is more important than ever! So in honor of Dental Hygiene Month, our team presents a few basics for you to keep in mind.
The word “cavity” gets tossed around a lot. Do you know exactly what a cavity is, and what causes them? Here’s a very short refresher course. Cavities are hollows left in your teeth when decay happens. Decay, or “dental caries” is actually an oral disease—a bacterial infection in your mouth. When this bacterial infection builds up on your teeth, it forms plaque. Having this bacteria doesn’t necessarily mean you have tooth decay. But when the bacteria interacts with sugars and starches, enamel-eating acid is created. So your first defense against tooth decay is your diet. With braces, even more food will get stuck in your teeth, so beware sticky foods and soft drinks.
Your second defense against tooth decay is keeping your teeth clean! Brush your teeth twice a day and be sure to floss so there’s less chance of creating acids that can wear down tooth enamel. Brushing also counteracts the plaque and tartar that’s building up over time. And remember that even with your own consistent care at home, regular professional checkups and cleanings are vital for sound oral health.
Now that you’re an expert on dental health basics, how do you think you’d stack up on a little quiz? Surprisingly the average grade on this quiz is a “D”! But we’re sure that our patients will do better than that!
After you take the quiz, leave us a comment below, or visit our Facebook page and comment or message us!
